Al Hammell is a 1989 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School. He played baseball collegiately at LeMoyne College and was selected by the New York Mets in the 28th round of the 1992 Major League Draft after his Junior season. Hammell signed his professional contract and went on to play five years in the New York Mets organization as a catcher reaching as high as the AAA level.

After ending his professional baseball playing career in 1997, Hammell served four years as the top Assistant Baseball Coach at Division 1 Marist College where he completed his Masters Degree in Public Administration and obtained his New York State Elementary Education Teaching Certification.

After two years of experience back in professional baseball working with the Angels organization as an area scout, Hammell began teaching elementary education in the Millbrook Central School District in 2003.

Before taking the Head Coaching position at Dutchess Community College in 2014, Hammell was a Head Baseball Coach for 9 years at the high school level.  He served for 3 years as the Head Coach at Millbrook High School and 6 years as the Head Coach at Arlington High School.

In his nine years ('06-'14) of coaching high school baseball, he led his teams to five Sectional Championships (three at Millbrook '06, '07, '08; and two at Arlington '12, '13). His high school teams were highly successful as both programs advanced to the NYS Final Four Championships in Binghamton, NY.  It was Milbrook's (Class C) first ever Baseball Final Four appearance (2006) and it was Arlington's (Class AA) first Baseball Final Four appearance (2013) in over 25 years.

In 2006, Hammell was named the New York State Baseball Coach of the Year in Class C.

He is now in his 8th season as the Head Coach at Dutchess Community College.

Hammell has also shown proven success in developing baseball players and moving many players on to play at the collegiate and professional levels. He currently works with the Taconic Rangers Showcase travel baseball program during the summer months.

Hammell served as an elementary education teacher for 15 years and has been serving as the Director of Athletics/Dean of Students at Millbrook High School for the past 5 years.

Coach Hammell resides in his hometown of Pleasant Valley with his family. His wife, Stacey, is a Special Education Teacher in the Martha Lawrence Early Intervention Pre-School program.
